What is Internet of things? Everything you need to know about the Internet of Things

As mentioned in previous articles, we all know the importance of electronic technology for today's modern world. This article will dive into the Internet of Things and what it has brought to our lives.

  • What is the Internet of Things?

To understand the Internet of things, we must understand what the Internet is. The Internet, also known as the network, is an essential part of people's daily lives around the world today. It is a global information system and a community of interconnected computers based on an internationally standardized internetworking protocol.

From above, the Internet of things can be understood as physical devices worldwide that are now connected to the Internet to collect and share data.

  • What are some examples of Internet of things devices?
Many physical devices can be converted into Internet of things devices if they can be connected to the Internet and controlled. A light bulb that can be turned on with a smartphone app or a driverless truck is one of the IoT devices.
IoT is mainly used for devices that are not generally expected to have an internet connection and communicate with human action. From there, we can see that PCs and smartphones are not generally considered IoT devices even though they add sensing capabilities. However, a smartwatch or some other wearable can be counted as an IoT device.

  • What are the benefits of the Internet of things to our lives?
    • For Businesses:
The benefits of IoT to businesses will often depend on the specific project implementation. However, the most crucial benefit is still helping businesses access more data about their products and internal systems. This improvement can make them better able to change and grow.
Manufacturers are adding sensors to product components so they can pass back data on how they are performing. Its purpose is to help companies spot when components are likely to fail and exchange it before it causes damage. Companies can also use the data generated by these sensors to make their systems and supply chains more efficient. The reason is that they will have more accurate data on what is happening.

    • For Consumers:
IoT contributes to making our living environments – our homes and offices and vehicles – more brilliant, more measurable, better, and more convenient. Intelligent speaker devices like Amazon's Echo and Google Home make it easier to play music, set timers, or get and find information. A home security system makes it easy to watch what is going on inside and out or help see and talk to visitors. Meanwhile, intelligent air conditioners can help us heat our homes before we get back, and smart bulbs can make it look like we are at home even when we are out.

  • What are the harms of the Internet of things to our lives?

Of course, IoT also has its wrong side. Security is one of the most significant issues with IoT. These sensors collect sensitive data in many cases – for example, what we say and do in our homes. Keeping security is paramount to consumer trust, but IoT security has so far been inferior. Too many IoT devices lack security basics like data encryption during use. The security holes allow hackers to track a user's location, eavesdrop on conversations or even communicate with users.
As the cost of an intelligent device becomes negligible, these problems will only become more common and harder to cure. IoT bridges the digital and physical world gap, which means hacking into devices can have dangerous real-world consequences. Hacking into temperature control sensors in power plants can trick operators into making catastrophic decisions; Controlling a driverless car can also end in disaster.

  1. Great post, Quang! It is simple but enough to understand about IoT. I totally agree with you that many dangers are rising along with the number of smart things around us. Such a dilemma situation!
Thank you for your sharing and look forward to your next post!

  2. Hi Quang

    I'm Tuan from group 1
Thank you for sharing your blog post, it's really allow to get the gist of the internet of thing. You also share the benefit of it not only for business but for consumer as well. And what I really like is that you also talk about the cons, harm of smart devices. So, I would like to hear if you think smart device can be safe enough for consumer to use with comfort?
    Thank you
